Argyll and Boat original linocut
This is an original hand-carved, hand-printed 5-stage reduction linocut of a view at Ardentinny in Argyll, Scotland. It was made during lockdown, when I was able to join a group of printmakers online. Part of the challenge was speed - we had three weeks to develop, design and print a three to five layer reduction linocut, to a maximum size of 22cm square.
Our creative leader supplied a collection of images from the area, which is near her home. I particularly liked this section of one photo, with the receding composition of the foreshore and ripples in the water, the trawler in mid-water and the tree-covered hill in sunshine in the background.
I'm pleased that the water has a translucent quality, and the muted blues and greens in the shadows is what I had hoped too. The title "Argyll and Boat" is a play on the name of the area, which is actually Argyll and Bute.
I chose the maximum size, and despite it being much larger than I normally work, I very much enjoyed making it. It's printed on Japanese Ho-Sho paper with Caligo Safewash oil-based relief ink. The print measures 22cm square, and the paper measures 39.7cm x 28.5cm. It is a limited edition run of five prints only. It will be supplied rolled in tissue paper in a cardboard tube.
