High Wray Farm original linocut
This is a handcarved, individually hand-printed linocut that I have made of High Wray Farm buildings, in the southern Lake District, from an original line drawing that I did on holiday in 2015. The drawing's original size was A6, roughly 10x15cm, in black pen with small highlights in sepia, but I chose to keep the print monochrome for simplicity's sake. High Wray is in a beautiful location near Windermere, and fairly near to the lovely village of Hawkshead. They have converted a barn to accessible holiday accommodation, which was great for my husband who is a wheelchair user. We enjoyed ten days there, and I could have happily stayed there forever.
I was challenged by a friend to make it into a linocut - she saw the drawing when I posted it online. The thought had already crossed my mind, as I had already made the fungus linocuts with fine gill detailing. I knew that I would have to enlarge it, so to give myself a chance I used the copier to double its size. Since a relief print of any kind involves the ink needing to be on the upper surface of the plate, I had to carve out all of the stones, leaving the lines between them to describe the space. It was long process, but worth it!
It is printed on BFK Rives paper with black Caligo Safe Wash relief ink.
It is one of an open edition, which means that I will re-print more when needed, and is therefore not a numbered, limited edition, although I will not be re-cutting another block once this one is worn out.
The image is approx. 15.5 x 20.5 cm, and the paper size is approx. 25.5 x 28.5 cm
