Italian Gardens, Trentham original linocut
This is an original hand-printed reduction linocut, from a limited edition of 12, of the famous Italian Gardens at the Trentham Estate, on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent. The estate underwent a major restoration in 2004, and the Italian Gardens were a part of that process - the current design sits within the framework of the old one. There are long avenues, fountains, interlinking borders, lots to keep avid gardeners interested with successive planting bringing changes through the seasons.
The linocut is based on a photograph that I took in late summer a few years ago, specifically as I thought it might work for a print. It took quite a bit of working out, and experimenting with new methods of creating texture. It's important for me to be able to try out different ways of doing things, as I never know where inspiration will strike next!
The print area is A5 (approx 15 x 21cm) and the paper size is around A4. It's hand-printed using oil-based Caligo Safewash relief inks, and as a reduction print, the lino is cut away more for each successive layer until only the last minor details are left. It is supplied without a mount or frame so that you can choose your own to suit your decor.
