Middleport Orange original linocut
This is a reduction linocut of Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, home of Burleigh Pottery, several independent businesses, and a vibrant museum. It's on the bank of the Trent and Mersey canal, in the north of Stoke-on-Trent near to the towns of Burslem and Tunstall. Built by Burgess and Leigh in 1888, it's been in continuous pottery production ever since. It had a major restoration between 2010 and 2014, when it was opened to visitors, and it has flourished ever since. It was the first home of the Great Pottery Throwdown before it moved across to Gladstone.
Middleport Pottery inspired me to begin the bottle kiln series, when we visited as a family in 2015. This view's geometry set off something in my head - all of a sudden I could picture the structure of a print, the colour sequence, and I couldn't wait to do something with it. It still took until February 2017 to begin the print, and I learnt a lot in making it.
The print size is approx 10 x 15cm and the paper size is approx A4. It was printed on BFK Rives 300gsm paper with Cranfield water-based relief printing ink (which is no longer currently available). It is supplied without a mount or frame so that you can choose your own to suit your decor.
